Firstly, the effective filtration area means the actual area the airflow gets through. Except of some low efficiency filters, normally the effective filtration area will be times, tens times or even hundred times of the area of filter's windward.

The dust are mainly stayed and collected on filter's windward. The larger the effective filtration area is, the more dust it could collect, and the longer life the filter can last. The larger the effective filtration area is, the lower speed it is for the wind passing through the unit area of the filter, and the lower resisting power from the filter it is. So enlarge the effective filtration area is the best way for extending filter's life According to experience and test, for same structured and material filters, when the resisting power is in a fixed value: If the effective filtration area increase by 50%, the working life of the filter will be extended by 70%～80%; if the area increase by 100%, the working life will be extended to 3 times of the original value.

Of course, the possibility of increasing of the effective filtration area should be determined by the filters' specific structure and site condition. For example, for industrial inkjet printer filters, we can increase the quantity of the filter bags and the length of the filter bag; for traditional filters with diaphragm, you can talk with manufacturers and narrow the space between diaphragms so as to increase layers of the filter papers; while for projects under design, filters with more filtering material are preferred.
